Tooth extraction
Tooth extraction is a surgical procedure in which a tooth is removed. This is usually a last resort if the tooth root is so damaged that the tooth can no longer be treated.
Sometimes a tooth is extracted because it has become loose due to advanced gum disease. Other times, it may be necessary to remove a tooth to prevent problems, such as with wisdom teeth or before orthodontic treatment.

In brief
Tooth extraction may be necessary if a tooth is too damaged, loose, or causing pain and discomfort.
At Bergen Dental Clinic, tooth extractions are performed under local anesthesia. The procedure is designed to be painless, and the tooth is removed as gently as possible.
After your treatment, you will receive clear instructions on how to care for the wound to ensure proper healing.
Does it hurt to have a tooth pulled?
At our practice, tooth extractions are performed painlessly. The tooth is numbed with a local anesthetic and carefully removed.
If the tooth is firmly embedded, it may be necessary to split it or remove some bone around the tooth in order to extract it. This is called surgical extraction.
The treatment itself may feel uncomfortable, but it shouldn't hurt.
Does it hurt to have wisdom teeth removed?
The procedure itself doesn't hurt, because you're well anesthetized.
In the days following a wisdom tooth extraction, you may have a sore in your mouth that can become painful and tender. This can usually be relieved with pain medication.
The experience of pain varies from person to person. Some people find it more uncomfortable in the days following the procedure, while others feel back to normal fairly quickly.

After a tooth extraction, it is important to follow a few simple tips to ensure proper healing:
- Do not drink, eat, rinse your mouth, or smoke for the first two hours after a tooth extraction.
- If you're bleeding, gently bite down on a cotton roll.
- Don't brush too hard in that area during the first week.
- If you experience tenderness or pain, you can take over-the-counter pain relievers.
- Please be patient. The wound may be tender for up to two weeks.
